In September of 2017, we explored the beauty of the small country of Slovenia.
We decided this year that we wanted to visit countries we haven't yet explored. Slovenia was moved up to the top of the list. From the soaring peaks of the Julian Alps and the subterranean magic of the Škocjan Caves to sparkling emerald-green lakes and rivers, Slovenia has it all.
We began with a visit to the capital city of Ljubljana to acclimate to the new time zone and explore this vibrant city. We loved this city and explored the old town as well as the castle above.
On September 2, we bagan a twelve day Sierra Club hiking trip with a group of ten including our Mountain View friend, Nancy Clum. We toured the most scenic areas of the western half of the country, and briefly went into Italy. We hiked, shared cultural experiences, and visited castles, farms, and quaint villages. We enjoyed two boat rides, and of course sampled the local cuisine.
Next, we hired a local high mountain guide for a hike in the Julian Alps and into Austria.
We were lucky to enjoy great weather for a few days, but unfortunately we did have quite a few cloudy, misty and very rainy days. But the precipitation did not keep us from enjoying a wonderful trip!
