In September of 2017, we cycled and hiked in Croatia.
After years of people talking about the beauty of Croatia, we decided to see it ourselves. We began with a visit to the capital city of Zagreb. We met up with our friends, Sue & Bob, their cousins Kristi & Tony and Croatian natives, Vladka and Vel, who now live in Mountain View and were currently here visiting family. They kindly agreed to give us a walking tour of Old Town Zagreb.
Our cycling began with 14 others on a Cycling Croatia tour. We explored Plitvice Lakes National Park with its myriad waterfalls, Paklenica National Park and its beautiful coastline, and Krka National Park with its magical canyon. We cycled to the parks, then hiked around inside each one.
Croatia's extraordinary island-speckled coastline is indisputably its main attraction. The first thing that strikes you is the clarity of the water. It sparkles with a jewel-like intensity in shades of emerald and sapphire. We cycled through the olive trees and ancient villages of the island of Brač before spending two days on the historic island of Hvar, one of the world's most beautiful islands. Then we climbed a mountain on the island of Korčula and descended with stunning views of the Pelješac Channel.
We ended the cycling trip with a extraordinary ride on the Pelješac Peninsula through vineyards on steep hills. The views were breathtaking the entire ride.
We spent the last three days of our vacation in the walled city of Dubrovnik, with its limestone streets, wonderful old stone buildings and narrow lanes. We had a fabulous time in Croatia, and were blessed with great weather the entire trip!
