In the fall of 2014 we cycled in Austria and the Czech Republic.
This was another different cycling tour for us. We wanted to learn more about the Czech Republic, as well as experience traveling around the country on a bicycle. We were lucky enough to discover Greenways Travel Club. Petra put together a great itinerary for us. The first leg of the cycling took us from Vienna (along the Czech Greenways long-distance cycling trail) to Prague. Our guide was Ladislav Ptacek, who was great at teaching us Czech culture and informing us of the history of the Czech Republic. In addition to his fantastic stories, he pointed out historical places and monuments along the way.
We spent ten days in Prague, trying to see as much as possible. We absolutely loved the city, and would go back in a minute. Our hosts Vladimir and Zdena Pistelak went out of their way to show us how to get around and teach us about Czech. There is so much to see, we barely experienced half of the sights on our agenda.
The second leg of cycling took us from Prague to Salzburg. While the first leg was all about learning Czech history, the second leg was about great cycling, with lots of hills, natural forests, and beautiful country sides. We definitely had our share of climbing and long descents. The hills were alive!
Our final days in Europe were spent in Salzburg. We especially enjoyed the walks up to the Fortress, the Nonnberg Abbey, and Mönchsberg for great views. And we loved the Old Town with all of its action and events.
