In the fall of 2013 we cycled the island of Mallorca and explored Barcelona, Spain
We've wanted to visit Barcelona for years, but on our earlier trips to Spain, we just didn't quite make it. And we discovered that even six very full days was not enough to see everything. But we did visit many places, and thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
We especially enjoyed walking through all of the diferent neighborhoods. We wandered in the Barri Gotic, Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. The area around the cathedral is a feast of undiscovered courtyards, grand squares, and schoolyards, We meandered through the Boqueria (market), musty junk shops, and classy antique shops, We stopped to listen to the street musicians strumming Catalan folk songs, and checked out the balconies with wrought-iron bars.
We strolled down the main street, Las Ramblas. daily. This grand boulevard takes you from the elegant Placa de Catalunya to the port of Barcelona. Las Ramblas, which means "stream" in Arabic, is an endless current of people and action. We especially loved the colossal Cathedral of Barcelona, the Catalan Music Hall (Palau de la Musica Catalana), the unfinished Sagrada Familia Basilica, Park Guell, and the Picasso Museum.
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain, surrounded by the crystal blue Mediterranean Sea. We pretty much covered the island - touring by bicycle, walking, hiking, a historic train ride, and even a private coach excursion. It was great to share the experience with sixteen other cyclists. Great dinners, wine, breakfasts, hotels, and hosts definitely made the experience exciting.
