October 3 - We were In Perpignan for two days. We enjoyed the architecture,

museums, food and shopping. It was mostly cloudy, but we had short moments of sun.

                   

ABOVE LEFT - The Castillet In Perpignan. It was first the city gate, then a prison.

It was built mostly in 14th century.

ABOVE MIDDLE - - The town walls were dismantled toward the end of the 19th century,

but the picturesque Castillet, a 14th- and 15th-century crenellated fort that

defended the principal gate still stands and is now a museum.

ABOVE RIGHT - Le Cinema Art Nouveau "le Castillet"

                   

ABOVE LEFT - The Castillet Cinema is the oldest theatre in Perpignan. It opened in 1911.

ABOVE MIDDLE - The building was designed in the modernist style.

ABOVE RIGHT - The Cathedral of Perpignan, dedicated to St. John the Baptist,

became the seat of the bishopric late in 1601.

                   

ABOVE LEFT - In 1778 the steeple of the church of St. John the Old , the initial

church of Perpignan, was used as a base for the construction

of the octagonal tower containing the carillon.

ABOVE MIDDLE - The first mass was celebrated in St Jean in 1453.Love the gargoyles.

ABOVE LEFT - Chapelle Saint Joseph is a side altar carved from marble.

ABOVE MIDDLE - There were twelve side altars, and each was a different design.

ABOVE LEFT -  The great organ was built during the fourteenth century. Nowadays the

organ of the Perpignan cathedral is classified Historical Monuments. It contains

58 games spread over four keyboards and pedalboards for a total of 5057 pipes.

ABOVE RIGHT - The exhibit compares sculptures by Rodin and Aristide Maillol.

The sculpture on the left is by Auguste Rodin.

This sculpture on the right is by Maillol. He influenced a generation of sculptors.

He and Rodin became friends and have a number of similar pieces included in this exhibit.

                   

ABOVE LEFT - The same group of school children that we saw outside

were now absorbed in the teacher’s explanation of Rodin.

ABOVE MIDDLE  - We visited the bourgeois art nouveau mansion Hotel Pams.

This is the grand entrance hall and staircase of onyx and pink marble.

Paintings by Paul Gervais who specialized in large decorations for resorts and casinos.

ABOVE RIGHT - Octagonal opening over first floor entryway

                   

ABOVE LEFT - Art and glazed tiles everywhere. This 19th century mansion

was owned by the founder of cigarette paper factory.

ABOVE MIDDLE  - Even the ceilings were beautiful.

ABOVE RIGHT - The patio garden connected the factory to the mansion.
