Eating Our Way Through France

We decided late in the trip that the food we were served was so imaginative and delicious,

that we should have a food section on the website. Had we decided earlier we would have

been able to post more photos. We definitely enjoyed the wonderful French cuisine.

As a note, we were just a little surprised that some French restaurants assume that

vegetarians eat fish. But once we explained that we only eat vegetables,

the chefs proceeded to prepare gourmet feasts for us!

We were in Rouen, France for four days and enjoyed some great meals, but only have

two photos from that fun city. This was September 4, a cold, rainy morning.

ABOVE LEFT - Fred with hot chocolate and croissant, Judith with Apricot tart

ABOVE RIGHT - Delicious vegetarian meal in Rouen. Multiple dishes, each a tasty surprise!

ABOVE - A wonderful dinner at our hotel in Brionne, France, September 6.

Dinner was included for quite a few of the hotels where we stayed. This was one.

Our first course was Sablé parmesan de tomates confites rélevées d’estragon, followed by

Roasted vegetables with wild mushrooms. For dessert, Judith chose La gateau chocolat

cru Mangaro, glace chocolat lait with coulis framboise. Debra selected Sur un sable,

une compote de rhubarb et quelques fraises

ABOVE - Honfleur, France September 7 - We picked a restaurant overlooking the harbor.

Judith decided on a Green salad and vegetable galette.

ABOVE LEFT - Judith trying Cidre Pommeau Calvados at the tasting bar. She especially liked a pear cider.

ABOVE MIDDLE and RIGHT - Beuvron, France ,September 8, Judith researched this restaurant before we

left home and even called before we left to have the lady of the manor (where we would be staying)

make reservations for us. This is the one-star Michelin restaurant Le Pave d'Auge.

We had three main courses plus several amuse-bouches

(bite size appetizers served before the meal and between courses).

ABOVE - Benouville, France - September 9 - The meal was a gastronomic delight!

We were never disappointed with the fantastic food served at the hotels where dinner was included.

Above are pictures of two of the courses - a salad and the wild mushroom entree.

ABOVE - St. Marie du Mont, France September 12 -

Set within the vast Regional Park of Cotentin and Bessin, this

French country manor-turned-hotel and restaurant is a delight.

The owner of the manor

instructed the chef to prepare a special meal for us.

Our entrees were  white asparagus, potatoes, quinoa, peas and Lima beans

Judith's dessert was a chocolate soufflé in crème Anglaise.

ABOVE - We stayed at St. Marie du Mont, France for two nights. On September 13

We enjoyed a pumpkin ravioli in a rich mushroom sauce for an entree.

And for dessert Judith decided on a Pistachio Mousse with raspberry sorbet.

ABOVE - Regneville, France September 14 - Dinner was again

included with our stay at the hotel. The chef had planned to serve us fish,

but when we explained that we ate only vegetables, we were then delighted

with the array of local veggies (prepared perfectly) that we were served.

For dessert, Fred chose the galette filled with the special House dark chocolate,

topped with chantilly and glace (housemade ice cream).

Judith  decided on the mixed fruit tart.

ABOVE RIGHT - Avranches, France September 15 - Dinner at the hotel.

We stayed in one of the garden rooms and loved walking from the garden

past the kitchen, where they were baking wonderful confections.

Above left - Our entree - Wild mushrooms, rice, and other fresh vegetables

For dessert the Triple Chocolate Roll was a winner.

ABOVE  - Fougeres, France, September 17 - We had lunch at the the Chateau de Fougeres.

Fred and Debra ordered a Breton Galette, a savory pancake made with buckwheat flour.

Fred's  galette came with a special  house dark chocolate sauce.

ABOVE - Dinner at the Chateau du Bois-Guy, France - September 17

When we planned this trip with the cycling company, they had us staying in Fougeres,

But we discovered there was a a restored 16th century castle just 12 km outside of Fougeres

That sounded very exciting. So Cyclomundo booked us for a castle room and dinner.

Above - the main course was a black pasta with fennel, mushrooms and delicious tomato sauce.

For dessert, Judith picked the Sabayon tart with strawberries, while

Fred chose the Lemon meringue tart with Bois-Guy chocolate.

ABOVE - Combourg, France, September 18 - Dinner at the Hotel Du Chateau restaurant.

Above are a few pics  - Fresh beet salad - Parmesan crisps on broccoli salad

And for dessert - Triple Chocolate mousse with crumbled cookies and sauce.

ABOVE - Dinan, France September 19 - Dinner at Creperie Ahna in the old town.

After exploring the old town all day, we narrowed our restaurant choices down to three.

We finally decided on the one that could prepare our entree with our own special

vegetarian choices as opposed to the one with the great ambience and location.

Fred's Ratatouille and mushroom galette - Debra's Grand Marnier dessert Flambé -

Fred's Dark chocolate dessert galette with mocha ice cream (glace) and chantilly.

ABOVE LEFT - St. Malo, France, September 20 - Judith's Vegetable Timbale

ABOVE RIGHT - September 21 - We both enjoyed the Galette Complet

(with egg and salad) and a cup of cider at La Creperie des Ambassadeurs.

ABOVE and BELOW - Blois, France, September 22 - Dinner at Le Castelet

Fred's Le Crottin de Chèvre Chaud (Warm goat cheese with veggies)

Judith's Gazpacho soup

BELOW - Fred's L'omelette aux œufs bio aux asperges (Asparagus omelette)

We both devoured the biggest and best chocolate mousse ever!

ABOVE - We had recommendations from numerous places that this

restaurant was vegetarian friendly and they were correct!

ABOVE - Cour-Cheverny, France, September 23 - we ate dinner at the excellent

restaurant Le Saint-Hubert in the small commune of Cour-Cheverny.

We were a little underdressed, but had a great time people watching.

Above – Fred eyes his Roasted Vegetables with balsamic reduction and polenta.

And for dessert, a most unusual and delicious Crème Brûlée.

ABOVE - Mosnes, September 24 - Dinner was not included with our room, but we

were so impressed with the hotel restaurant that we decided to eat there.

Once again we were surprised with another special vegetarian meal.
