September 18, 2017 -  We walked to the train station to get our tickets to Zagreb.

We did manage to get a few photos before the rain.

ABOVE LEFT - The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation on Preseren Square.

The front facade of the church was built in the Baroque style in 1703–1706.

ABOVE MIDDLE - The Baroque main altar was executed by the sculptor Francesco Robba.

ABOVE RIGHT - Many of the original frescoes were ruined by the cracks in the ceiling

caused by the Ljubljana earthquake in 1895. The new frescoes were

painted in 1936 by the Slovene impressionist painter Matej Sternen.

ABOVE LEFT  - The organ in the Franciscan Church.

ABOVE MIDDLE - The Galerija Emporium, a large department store stocking major

international fashion brands, is housed in a renovated Art Nouveau palace.

ABOVE RIGHT - The Galerija Emporium is one of the nicest Art Nouveau buildings in

Ljubljana. Originally it was the Urbanc House, built in 1903. The staircase is amazing!

ABOVE LEFT - The Grand Hotel Union - built to pay homage and copy Prague's romantic image.

ABOVE MIDDLE - National and University Library (Narodna in Univerzitetna Knjiznica).

This library is Jože Plečnik's masterpiece, completed in 1941. The red & gray color scheme

evokes the red soil and chunks of granite of the Karst region, south of Ljubljana.

The blocks of irregular size & shape represent a complex pattern that suggests barriers

on the path to enlightenment. The three rows of upper windows are designed to

represent an open book. Aside from being a great work of architecture, the building

also houses the most important library in Slovenia, with more than 2 million books.
