September 8, 2018 - Avignon at night

We often discover that nightlife in European cities is so different than daytime.

At night time, the buildings and famous landmarks are illuminated,

the cafes are bustling with activity, and people are just out walking around

and savoring the sights.

We were lucky enough to get tickets to the lightshow at the Palais des Papes,

and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. The animations were constantly moving

around the walls of the courtyard for over an hour.

ABOVE MIDDLE - Pont d’Avignon on the Rhone. This bridge was built between

1171-85 and was one of only three in the Middle Ages to cross the Rhône River.

It originally had 22 arches but due to disastrous floods over the years, only four remain.

ABOVE RIGHT - Anyone who learned French in school will know the song

about this famous bridge, "Sur le pont d’Avignon, on y Danse..."

ABOVE LEFT - Avignon City Hall (Hotel de Ville d'Avignon)

ABOVE MIDDLE - Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) was built in 1309

when a French Pope decided to move the center of the Catholic Church

out of Italy and into Avignon.  Popes resided here until 1403.
