Our hike today started at Wengen (above) at about 4200 feet above sea level.
Our first destination was Mannlichen at 7350 feet - about a 3150 foot climb.
The trail was sunny and more like a farm road for the first part.
The view (above) of Wengen was pretty cool, as we gently climbed.
We stopped to enjoy the sun and the majestic view.
Then we entered the forest. The trail got a little steeper. Little did we know, it would get worse.
The tram overhead began to look inviting. The trail was now snaking up the mountain.
We next realized we were headed into the avalanche area with its snow catching fences.
It must be time for another snack break. Ah, here's our bench with a view.
Ok, let's climb up alongside the avalanche fences. How much steeper can it get?
Oh yeah, this is steep. Did you bring the grass skis? Wow, what a view! You can see forever.
We made it to the top! 3000 feet of climbing in 2 1/2 miles!
Above left, the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau - above right, looking toward Grindelwald
Above, the alpenhorn players serenaded us - what incredible acoustics!
Above, the Alpen bell ringers played too.
We continued on to Kleine Scheidegg. The colors of the flowers and grasses were awesome.
